ICYMI….Days before Christmas, an Illinois judge rejected a lawsuit brought by anti-abortion groups against the state over a bill signed by Governor Rauner expanding public funding for abortions.
The suit sought an emergency injunction, temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against the implementation of the bill.
HB40, which Governor Bruce Rauner signed into law in September that permits abortion coverage by state employee health insurance and Medicaid funds. The bill also safeguards abortion access by striking statutory language expressing the state’s intent to criminalize the procedure if the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion, Roe v. Wade, is ever overturned. Women’s rights groups celebrated the decision, but conservatives and anti-abortion groups were furious.
Again, this begs the question: why did pro-life lawmakers WAIT until AFTER Rauner signed HB 40 to take action?
Crybaby GOP lawmakers were silent on HB 40 until after Rauner signed it
The taxpayer-funded abortion bill, HB 40, was introduced in December 20, 2016 and conservative lawmakers, beholden to Bruce Rauner and his money wad, were silent. On April 25, 2017, this abortion bill passed the Illinois House and most Republican voters had no idea the bill’s passage was even a possibility. On May 10, the bill passed the Illinois Senate and, again and again and again, not a peep from Illinois GOP lawmakers.
Why was HB 40 kept a secret from pro-family voters and why didn’t conservative lawmakers say anything? Was it because they were beholden to Bruce Rauner after he funded their campaigns and helped them win their primaries?
Why did conservative lawmakers reserve their outrage over HB 40 until AFTER Rauner signed the bill and it was too late to undo it?
No take backs here.
These two pro-life groups helped elect Rauner
The emergency injunction was filed on behalf of Illinois taxpayers, 10 Illinois pro-life groups and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Springfield.
Two of the groups involved in the suit stand out: Family PAC and Illinois Family Action. Family PAC is chaired by Paul Caprio, who endorsed Rauner in 2014 despite his support as a major sponsor of Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union’s legal fund for abortion rights. Mr. Caprio also broke with pro-life leaders in 2016 and refused to endorse incumbent pro-life Sen. Sam McCann for re-election Caprio endorsed Rauner’s pick for state senator instead.
David Smith, Director of Illinois Family Action also waffled on Rauner in 2014, refusing to denounce him in the pro-family community. Many have commented on the video of Smith hemming and hawing about being “conflicted” over Bruce Rauner. My God, is he a pro-life leader or isn’t he?
Replace pro-life leaders who endorsed Rauner
This is where the rubber meets the road: pro-life leaders who endorsed/helped/supported/took donations from Rauner don’t have credibility on pro-life issues anymore. Illinois needs new pro-life leaders to replace these compromised groups and leaders.
Republicans who, after taking donations from Rauner, refused to criticize him/speak out/or were silent on HB 40 or SB 31 should also be replaced by candidates of principle in the upcoming elections. Legislators who are beholden to Rauner and his money clip must be voted out.
Filing a puny failed injunction against the state of Illinois and Bruce Rauner’s abortion bill is crying over spilt milk. The damage is done. They had their chance to prevent the damage and they blew it.
